AN IMPORTANT NOTE

Brown-blotched tree frog (Polypedates bengalensis), spotted at Kharidangar in the district of Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. I documented this just a few meters ahead of my residential yard. I have been informed that this may well be one of the rarest – possibly one of the first sightings too of the species in the district of Purba Medinipur, West Bengal.

I have already upladed the documentation to the portal of India Biodiversity Portal duly. Let us await the response regarding the observation.

Face to Face (Promo I)

FACE TO FACE

After the ground breaking extension of the horizon of awareness through Wildlife Awareness Rally (WAR) and International Wildlife Film Show (formerly known as Wildlife Film Show and Seminar), Anubhab – Expedition for Better Tomorrow is on the trail of something exclusive, as well as, tremendously relevant. Face to Face is an interactive seminar, conspicuously meant for an eminent niché of research scholars, teaching faculty, and students. In the first series of this novel endeavour, Mr Rajarshi Banerji, eminent wildlife and conservation photographer, will focus on "Wildlife Photography on Conservation and Documentation of Endangered Species." An avid wildlife enthusiast, Mr Banerji has travelled a vast horizon of numerous ecological niché. We are eagerly looking forward to being enlightened with the minute contextual detailing behind every scene presented.

While the topic of the first session is a beacon of chief prevalence, the second session is going to be an equally important deliverance on human-animal conflict. With years of experience, Dr Santanu Ghosh is going to present "Man and Elephant: The Saga of Love and Hatred," pinpointing the awe-inspiring binary of existence and obligations.

We look forward to the active participation of enthusiastic minds. Fundamentalities that should be noted:

Refined Elixir!

Three precious jewels that are just incorporated in my library more recently. The middle one – Lawrence Anthony's The Elephant Whisperer (Pan Macmillan, 2009) just came yesterday. So, have not started it yet. South African conservationist, Anthony was asked to accept a herd of 'rogue' elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand. His common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival — dangerous and unpredictable, they would be killed if Lawrence wouldn't take them in.

As Lawrence risked his life to create a bond with the troubled elephants and persuade them to stay on his reserve, he came to realize what a special family they were, from the wise matriarch Nana, who guided the herd, to her warrior sister Frankie, always ready to see off any threat, and their children who fought so hard to survive. The story is about Lawrence Anthony and his experience with a herd of wild elephants. Lawrence owns the Thula Thula game reserve in South Africa. He gets a call one day asking if he is interested in having a herd of wild elephants.

Whispers from the Wild (Penguin Books, 2012), a compilation of writings by E. R. C. Davidar (father of author Priya Davidar who edited this book) very aptly echoes Bitto Sahgal's appreciative words: "Some people talk about nature, others listen to it. Listening can reveal wonders like how to befriend an elephant, how to talk to a tiger, and how to live in jungle." E.R.C. Davidar (Reggie to his friends), who passed in early 2010 in Puducherry at 88, was one of the early advocates of wildlife conservation. He operated in an era when environmental protection had not been institutionalised. To talk about Women in the Wild (Juggernauts, 2023) is to be mesmerised by the ten absolute anecdotes that talk about the contributive ambit of ten of the most brilliant wildlife biologists. Definitely, a large chunk of accolades goes to the editor, Anita Mani. Looking forward to have its essence with great expectation.

Rest in peace, the Warrior!

A.J.T. Johnsingh passed away on 7 June. The sphere of the Indian wildlife and ecology lost one of its massive pillars. Asir Jawahar Thomas Johnsingh (14 October 1945 – 7 June 2024) was an Indian vertebrate ecologist from Tamil Nadu. Johnsingh's study of the Dhole in Bandipur National Park was the first study of a free-ranging animal by an Indian scientist. Author and editor of numerous editions, his departure rendered an eternal void.

The featured one is one of the frames of Johnsingh at Uttarey, Sikkim, in 2013.
